What are formaldehyde scavengers?

The semi-finished products sector uses formaldehyde as a reagent for the glues production, which are essential in the plywood and chipboard production processes.

The semi-finished products sector uses formaldehyde as a reagent for the glues production, which are essential in the plywood and chipboard production processes.

The Standard which regulates performance characteristics required for wood-based panels, regarding the use of formaldehyde states release thresholds (UNI EN ISO 13986:2015) of this Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), in order to make safe the use of semi-finished products.

In this context, what are formaldehyde scavengers and which is their purpose?

What are Formaldehyde Scavengers?

Formaldehyde, classified as a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) due to its high volatilisation in environments, is categorizes as dangerous and harmful when it is found at high concentrations in air we breathe. In this regard, our R&D laboratory has been able to intercept the need of the panel sector and to provide a solution that can reduce the problem of the atmospheric emission of formic aldehyde.

KALI’s formaldehyde scavengers are versatile formulations that are used both for the production of particle board and for plywood: they are combined with raw materials and resins during the production process.

The liquid consistency of the product guarantees a high versatility, in fact the formula is suitable for most production plants.

Wood Ammonia Solution (W.A.S.)

The W.A.S. product is the result of a continuous process of study and improvement: liquid and with an acidic pH value, the solution is very easy to use within the production process.

Furthermore, Wood Ammonia Solution (W.A.S.) has the same catalysts’ properties, being able to substitute their presence, demonstrating excellent hardening properties on resins too.

What is the purpose of using formaldehyde scavengers?

The primary purpose of the scavengers is decreasing the volatilization of the formaldehyde in the air and therefore its release from semi-finished products, ensuring compliance with current legislation and ensuring a safe product for the end user. We can summarize the usefulness of formaldehyde catchers in three steps:

  1. They reduce the volatilisation of formic aldehyde from the semi-finished product,
  2. They consequently reduce the presence of the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) in the environments where the panels are used (especially in the first period, where there is a massive release of formaldehyde),
  3. They contribute to reach with the panel the best formaldehyde emission class (E1).
