Active fire protection with BC and D extinguishing powders

The active fire protection market consists of powdered extinguishing agents to extinguish class B, C and D fires, as defined by UNI EN 2:2005.

In addition to the most common and marketed extinguishing powder, the ABC dry powder, the active fire protection market consists of other powdered extinguishing agents to extinguish class B, C and D fires, as defined by UNI EN 2:2005.

The BC extinguishing powder: use and composition

The extinguishing powder for class B and C fires has a more specific use than the polyvalent ABC powders, which also act on class A fire. Mainly used in the European market, the BC chemical powder is used in the naval field or used in the refinery, petrochemical and automotive industries.

Unlike polyvalent ABC powders, which are made of monoammonium phosphate and ammonium sulphate, the BC extinguishing powder is characterized by a base pH and is composed of raw materials such as:

-  sodium bicarbonate,

-  potassium sulphate,

-  potassium bicarbonate,

-  calcium carbonate.

The BC powder has a higher bulk density: the values are approximately 1 g/mL compared to the values of 0.80-0.90 g/mL reached by the ABC polyvalent powders; this allows to fit in fire extinguishers of particularly small dimensions, which are a fundamental requirement in some sectors (such as the automotive).

The BI-EX® extinguishing powder

Among the different products in the BC type, the BI-EX® powder is composed of Solvay® sodium bicarbonate and it has obtained a 233 B fire rating in a major European certifying institute.

Extinguishing powder for class D fire: use and composition

The extinguishing powder for class D fire is mainly composed of chlorides. It is mainly used in the industrial field, that is in places where flammable metal substances are used or processed, such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, aluminium.

Its peculiarity in composition and use, is also reflected in its special packaging, that is 25 kg drums.
